The tundra is a large area of frozen land. It has almost no trees. Winter lasts almost entire year in the tundra! Temperatures are usually only
-32F (-36C), and blizzards, or snowstorms with strong winds, are common. For six to ten weeks a year, the tundra warms up. Summer temperatures reach only 54F (12C), and rain almost never falls. In the tundra, most of the ground remains frozen all year. The thick layer of the frozen ground that never thaws out is called permafrost.
